Reading

At Holmfirth J I & N School we use the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds reading scheme to teach phonics in Reception and Year 1. We use the Little Wandle Rapid Catch-Up in Year 2 and above for children who need more support with mastering the phonic code. There are also some useful videos so you can see how they are taught at school and feel confident about supporting their reading at home. Find our full Reception and Year 1 teaching programme overview here to see what your child will learn and when. In Year 2, we follow the Little Wandle Bridge to Spelling teaching programme, followed by multiple spelling units to create confident spellers.

We want our children to confidently communicate their thoughts and their ideas with the written word. By the time children at Holmfirth JI&N School leave our school, it is the aim that they will be polished and independent readers.
